So I went back to the hospital at 5pm on 10th January, I was just at the point where I wanted to be getting my baby girl into the world safe and sound.
I was taken to a huge labour room, changed into a less than flattering gown and was put on the constant blood pressure monitor together with the fetal heart monitor and they started the induction process at 6pm. That being that they inserted what looked like a tea bag inside my you know what which was filled with chemicals.
Hubby was at this point a little silly and posted to Facebook that we had checked into the hospital. I dont think he realised how long the journey could be.
We settled down and watched Ted, well, I say watched but I was really to full of nerves, anticipation and excitement to really get into it. Once that film finished hubby watched Inbetweeners and I tried but failed to get to sleep as at 1am the contractions started.
At 7am when they decided to do a check I was found to be 2cm dilated but fully effaced. Given that I had been experiencing contractions for 6 hours I was disappointed I was only that much dilated but hey ho.
The day was spent having consistent contractions but around 5pm when they checked me I was only 5cm dilated. I had been in labour 16 hours at this point and my contractions were stopping. So, I agreed to take the Pitocin to get the contractions going.
About an hour and a half in I took them up on the epidural, the contractions from the Pitocin were brutal and I couldnt take it anymore. Let me just add here that they had the whole way through been trying to push the Pitocin and the Epidural on me. They didnt quite understand that I was using the breathing and noise techniques I had learnt in yoga and was happy to be going it without the pain relief. Until the Pitocin of course.
At 9pm when they checked me I was 7cm dilated, however, baby K was having heartrate decelerations so they turned off the Pitocin (at my request). They also broke my waters at this point to hopefully speed things along.
I went to sleep at this point, and at 3am when they came to check again I was still at 7cm dilated so they called the on call doctor in and it was found that K was back to back (hence the ouchy contractions), was stuck in my cervix and that my pelvis was too small. It was decided at that point that I would be rushed into surgery for an emergency C Section.Thank god I had the epidural earlier on!
I was freezing cold during the surgery and felt very sick. Hubby cut the cord as K was delivered at 3.42am weighing 7lb 2oz and he went off with baby K to get her footprints taken, do some paperwork and stuff whilst I was being sewn up. I was then taken back to the labour room and had my first chance to actually feed K. I must add that I had briefly held her in the surgery room! I was so shocked and emotional at how beautiful and tiny she was! Though also very scared and exhausted!
Soon after we were taken to the postpartum room, but more on the after period next entry!
